SHOP staff at a store in Angus performed a citizen’s arrest thinking they had caught fugitive sex offender Lee Cyrus – only to discover he was an innocent shopper.

Customer Peter Williamson, 35, of Arbroath, was detained by shop staff when he called at the Costcutters store in Arbroath’s Montrose Road on Wednesday. However, the case of mistaken identity was confirmed after officers from Tayside Police were called to the shop.

Cyrus, 47, absconded from an open prison in Lincolnshire on 9 October and is being sought
in connection with a sexual attack in Perth.

A spokeswoman said: “Tayside Police can confirm that officers attended at a shop in Arbroath following a reported sighting of absconder Lee Cyrus. It was quickly confirmed it was not him.”
