Independent living call for city's disabled

DISABLED people across the Lothians are being encouraged to help promote independent living.

Organisers of a seminar in the Capital next week want people to influence decision makers at a local and national level on what is needed for people with additional requirements.

Jim Elder-Woodward, of the Independent Living in Scotland (ILIS) project, said: "Independent living means disabled people of all ages having the same freedom, choice, dignity and control as other citizens at home, work and in the community.

"It does not mean living on your own or fending for yourself. It means rights to practical assistance and support to participate in society and live an ordinary life.

"For disabled people to be in control, they have to be pushing the boundaries and working with, challenging and raising awareness of policy-makers."

The seminar – organised by ILIS and the Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living (LCIL) – takes place on Wednesday at the Thistle Foundation, on Niddrie Mains Road.
