Immigrant jailed for drug haul

AN ILLEGAL immigrant from China was jailed for two years after police raided a house and found cannabis plants worth up to £40,000 being grown inside.

Deng Zhang pleaded guilty to being involved in the supply of cannabis at Haddington Sheriff Court yesterday.

The court heard that the 29-year-old was found in the house in Haddington on 29 October last year following a tip-off.

Zhang, who entered Scotland illegally in 1999 after being smuggled in by people traffickers, claimed he had only stayed in the home for one night.

Sheriff Daniel Kelly sentenced Zhang to two years in prison and recommended he be deported back to China afterwards.
