'I sensed something was wrong' murder trial told

A WOMAN'S former boyfriend has told a murder trial jury he had sensed something was wrong when she "disappeared".

Alistair Gibb, 30, said Samantha Wright, 24, was a "free spirit" and he thought she had perhaps left her home in Edinburgh to move back to her family in England, but he discovered they had not heard from her either.

"It became immediately apparent that something was definitely wrong," said Mr Gibb.

The High Court in Edinburgh also heard yesterday that Ms Wright and a man had been filmed by CCTV cameras in the city centre possibly only hours before her death.

Robert Chalmers, 59, denies murdering Ms Wright "by means unknown" on 12 or 13 June, 2008, at a house in Magdalene Drive, Duddingston, Edinburgh.

Chalmers also pleads not guilty to a charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by attempting to dismember the body, concealing it in the house and then in a wheelie bin, where it was covered with foliage.

The court has heard Ms Wright's body was found in the bin in the back garden at Magdalene Drive in October 2009.

Her father, Jeremy Wright, 48, told the court she "could not see the dark side in anything" and would often speak to strangers.

He said: "I loved the fact she was so open and friendly, but realised it could be potentially dangerous."

The trial continues.
