Hunt for killer after flats death in East Lothian

POLICE launched a murder inquiry yesterday after the death of a man who was found injured at a block of flats.

The 28-year-old was one of two people found hurt at the property in Musselburgh, East Lothian, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Both were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police said they found the men after being called to a house at 1.15am yesterday.

Residents only discovered what had happened when they awoke yesterday to find that the house in Eskside West had been cordoned off.

Police said a full forensic examination was taking place at the property. Detectives were also seen taking a close look at a telephone box, which had also been taped off.

Eskside West is a popular area for dog-walking close to the River Esk.

Some residents yesterday said the neighbourhood had gone downhill in recent years, with police being frequently called out.

Susan Sanderson, who lives near the murder scene, said: "As far as I'm led to believe it's drugs and alcohol.

"I've been here for a long time and we never had anything like this before. In the last two or three years it's just been pretty bad – comings and goings, police trying to get into the address, and things like that.

"It's a murder. Hopefully they will crack down now."

Officers have asked anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have information that could help them with their inquiry to get in touch.

Detectives can be reached by calling Lothian and Borders Police on 0131-311 3131 or Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
