Hunt for hammer attacker

POLICE are hunting a man who attacked a 74-year-old woman with a hammer in a "completely random and unprovoked assault".

Strathclyde Police said the attack took place shortly after 11:10am, when the elderly victim had left her home in Cumbernauld's Abbotsford Place to meet her daughter at a bus stop.

As she made her way to the stop in Greenfaulds Road she cut through Abbotsford Court where a man approached her from behind, pushed her, and hit her on the back of the head with a hammer. She was shocked and distressed, but not badly injured.

Detective Constable Scott Esplin said: "From speaking to the victim, this doesn't appear to be an attempted robbery, and looks like a complete random and unprovoked assault."
