Hunt for bag-snatcher after woman robbed in street

A BAG-snatcher is being hunted by police after he robbed a woman as she walked in Leith.

The 37-year-old victim had walked from Cadiz Street on to Assembly Street at about 6.45pm on Saturday when the man approached her from behind, nudged her in the back and demanded her purse.

She immediately handed it over, and the man ran off towards Elbe Street. A man who was passing by tried to chase the suspect, but lost him as he reached Elbe Street.

The suspect is described as being white, in his 20s, around 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall, of slim build with messy mousy brown hair. He was clean-shaven, spoke with a local accent, and was wearing a grey-coloured hooded top.

A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward.

"In particular, we are keen to trace the passer-by who came to the woman's aid, and chased the suspect.

"We would also be keen to hear from anyone who recognises the description of the suspect."
