Hundreds delayed as power cut hits airport

HUNDREDS of air travellers had their flights disrupted yesterday after a major power failure hit one of Scotland's busiest airports.

Aberdeen Airport suffered a full power failure across the terminal for more than two hours yesterday morning as supplies were disrupted to a large part of the Dyce area of the city.

An estimated 400 homes and businesses were also affected by the power failure which was caused by an underground cable fault.

Emergency generators were used to provide lighting in the terminal, but departures had to be grounded as there was no power to process passengers through security. Incoming flights, however, were not affected.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen airport said: "Approximately 30 flights were affected to destinations which included Heathrow, Manchester, Belfast, and Gatwick."

The power cut lasted from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

A spokesman for Scottish & Southern Energy said the problem was due to a fault with an underground cable. He added that engineers had "re-routed" electricity from elsewhere while the fault was repaired.
