POLICE have launched a probe after human remains, believed to be a fragment of bone, were discovered on a beach in Angus this week.

The grim discovery, on Lunan Beach near Montrose on Wednesday, came just days after a woman’s skull was found near an Edinburgh golf course.

Part of Gogarburn Golf Club was shut down as police investigated the discovery last weekend.

A wider search of the area around Lunan Beach turned up no further remains.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm families of missing persons have been contacted after a fragment of human bone was recovered from Lunan Bay in Montrose and inquiries are continuing.”

Further police investigations were carried out on Thursday.
