Hotel has a bright idea

THE Edinburgh Calton Hotel is set to be illuminated at night, under plans which have been lodged with the city council.

The proposal would see the hotel facade on North Bridge, Royal Mile and Jeffrey Street "washed" with lights above the retail units at ground level.

The aim is to create a "soft, aesthetic" effect on the hotel. The building is Grade B listed and part of the World Heritage Site, and the applicants said they would take every precaution necessary to minimise the effect on the architecture.

A decision on the application is expected later this year.
