Hostel hit by suspected norovirus

More than 20 people at a city travellers' hostel have fallen ill in a suspected outbreak of the norovirus bug.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC)have confirmed that 23 guests and one member of staff at the Glasgow Euro Hostel have displayed symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting thought to be caused by norovirus.

None of those who are symptomatic are giving cause for concern and infection control measures have been put in place.

The affected guests have been advised to stay in their rooms or dorms, and to use separate toilet and eating facilities from those who are not unwell.

Dr Eleanor Anderson, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde public health consultant, said: "The clinical presentation of these individuals is very suggestive of norovirus infection.

We will continue our investigations to confirm the cause of the illness and will monitor the situation closely. We are satisfied with the precautions that have been put in place to limit the spread of the illness and the hostel is still operational."

Gordon Anthony, general manager of Glasgow Euro Hostel, said: "We are working in conjunction with the public health authorities and all the guidelines that have been issued we have put into force.

"It is not confirmed as norovirus. We believe it's under control and believe it's only affecting a very limited number of guests."
