'Honeymoon killing' suspect threatened rehab staff

Shrien Dewani was kicked out of The Priory Hospital after threatening to punch a member of staff, a court was told yesterday.

The British businessman, accused of ordering the murder of his wife on honeymoon in South Africa, also threw a cushion at the employee and became aggressive towards a female patient, it emerged.

The 31-year-old was on bail at the Bristol hospital pending extradition proceedings, but police were called in following his disruptive behaviour over the weekend, and staff at the Priory asked for him to be removed.

He appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London yesterday, where District Judge Howard Riddle renewed his bail.

Dewani, who is said to be suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, was transferred to Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke, a low-secure mental health hospital in Somerset, on Monday.

He is now awaiting a mental health assessment and transferral to Bristol's Fromeside Clinic, a medium-secure NHS hospital where he would be under supervision 24 hours a day.

Wearing a black hooded sweater and dark trousers, he mouthed words to himself in the dock.
