Holocaust victim gives Lothians talk

A HOLOCAUST survivor is to be the guest speaker at an event being held as part of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The audience will hear a vivid account of the horrors of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany from Rudi Oppenheimer, 75, who was sent to the Bergen Belsen camp.

Although he survived, many members of his family died there and in other camps, and he now devotes much of his time to visiting schools to tell a new generation about his experiences.

The event is being organised and presented by pupils and staff from six Midlothian secondary schools and will be open to the public and free of charge.

Earlier today Mr Oppenheimer was set to meet groups of Midlothian school pupils, many of whom have been studying various aspects of the Holocaust and genocide.

He is one of the few remaining survivors who is able to give a first-hand account of these terrible events.

The event is being held tonight in the Dalkeith Schools Community Campus, and starts at 7pm.
