Historic cook book serves up cash for healthy eating

A UNIVERSITY that raised almost £10,000 by relaunching a 100-year-old recipe book is to donate some of the cash to help promote healthy eating in disadvantaged areas.

The centenary edition of The Glasgow Cookery Book, which was launched in 2009 by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), was the set textbook for the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, affectionately known as the Dough School.

Its recipes formed the foundations of modern home economics and the book found its way on to kitchen shelves across the country.

GCU said it had raised nearly £10,000 from sales and donations for the Queen’s College Fund, which was set up to support community-related university programmes and student initiatives.

Queens College and Glasgow Polytechnic merged in 1993 to form the institution as it is now. The Caledonian Club, a GCU initiative aimed at widening participation and community engagement, will receive £4,000 to develop a healthy eating and nutrition programme for parents.
