Hip-hop hopefuls Dead Set to reach the Deezy heights

HE is a hip-hop star from the mean streets of, er, Leith - and now he has been tipped as the next big thing.

• Dead Set Gemini's Deezy and Jee4ce

Deezy, aka 23-year-old student Sandeep Seegobin, is one half of Dead Set Gemini.

Their first album, Music for Space Ships, is released tomorrow and the duo - completed by 26-year-old Belfast rapper Jee4ce, aka Ronan Cherry - are about to perform for potentially their biggest audience yet, when they take to the airwaves to perform a selection of songs live on BBC Radio 1's Ally MacRae show.

It's all a far cry from the days of playing gigs at small clubs in Edinburgh, but the pair have their sights set even higher.

Industry insiders are confident the duo can make it big, with MTV apparently interested in showcasing their videos and the BBC tipping them as one to watch for the future.

The band have been working with high-profile London producers Lloyd Perrin - who has worked with acts including Pixie Lott and also produced the StreetDance 3D movie soundtrack - and ShowNProve.

Sandeep, who still lives in Leith, is currently studying for and HND in music business at Jewel and Esk Valley College.

The former Broughton High School and Leith Academy pupil has been perfecting his lyrical skills since the age of 14.

He has ambitions to carve out a long career in the industry, and as well as writing songs for other artists he has also taken a new act under his wing to act as manager.

"I have been working at music since I was 14, and now I'm hoping that I can make my mark in the music industry," he said. "It it difficult to get recognition, especially now that most people download music. It's easier than ever to get your stuff out there, but it's harder to get recognised.

"It was great to hear our records on the radio though, and we're looking forward to playing live on Sunday. We've managed to make quite lot of friends in the industry, and working with producers like ShowNProve and Lloyd Perrin is a huge help."

While his partner-in-crime Jee4ce is "the man who handles the battle raps" - lyrical confrontations like those made famous by the Eminem film 8 Mile - Sandeep says he is more focused on music.

"Jee4ce is a great battle MC - I don't battle, I'm definitely more about music, and I have been writing songs for other people and working on different tunes," he said. "The band does do a lot of hip-hop but we are looking to develop our own sound, and the album is actually a story told through the music, which is based on a comic book that we have been working on."So there's a lot to it."

While their music is far from traditional Scottish, the pair do pay homage to their Edinburgh roots, both in their lyrics - which include the occasional mention of Leith - and most notably in the video performance for their song What's Your Star Sign, filmed around the Royal Mile at last year's festival.
