Hip fracture figures soar

MORE than three people a day are treated for hip fractures in the Lothians, figures have shown.

The 1050 who were admitted to hospital in 2009 was the highest in years, and the second most in Scotland.

It lays bare the impact on health services of an ageing population, with experts saying the freezing temperatures of last winter also would have had an impact on statistics.

All of those treated were over the age of 50.
