Hibs star fined for struggling with police

HIBS star Jay Shields has been fined for struggling with police after trouble in a city nightclub.

Shields, 22, pleaded guilty at the city's Sheriff Court yesterday to committing the breach in St Leonard's Police Station on March 26 last year.

Fiscal Laura McLean told Sheriff John Horsburgh, QC, that police had been called to the Subway nightclub in Lothian Road at 3.15am.

Shields was taken to the police station but became aggressive, throwing his belongings at civilian staff member Alistair McLean then shouting threats and swearing at Mr McLean and Constable Kosmos Papakyriakou.

They took hold of his arms and he struggled violently, refused to calm down and had to be carried into a cell.

Defence agent Kathleen More said there had been an altercation in the nightclub involving Shields and door staff during which, Shields claimed, he had been punched in the face. Miss More said Shields regretted his actions.

Sheriff Horsburgh fined Shields 475 - roughly a week's wages.
