Help at hand for male abuse victims

A HELPLINE for men who suffer domestic abuse across the Lothians has been launched.

The Men's Advice Line, run by a team of trained advisers, went live yesterday.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 Lothians men report being abused by a partner every year. This new helpline – the first of its kind in Scotland – will provide information and guidance.

It is a welcome boost for those who have long argued there is a disproportionate level of support for abused women, even though 14 per cent of police calls on the matter are from men.

Television presenter Stephen Jardine launched the line, adding: "Think of domestic abuse and you think of men attacking women but there is another side to the problem that remains in the shadows. An increasing number of men are also victims but often they are too ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help. The bottom line is all abuse, physical or psychological, is unacceptable and no-one should have to put up with it.

"Men need to know they are not alone, that their voices will be heard and that support is in place to make sure they no longer have to put up with abuse."

The helpline's number is 0808 801 0327.
