Heart disease link revealed

ETHNIC groups in the Lothians are more at risk of heart disease, a study has found.

Experts at Edinburgh University revealed a number of statistics from research which showed people of south-east Asian origin, particularly Pakistanis and Indians, were more likely to have cardiac trouble.

They cited differences in diet and lifestyle as the main reasons for the increased risk.

However, it was not all good news for Lothians residents with local roots. The analysis also found Scots were 20 per cent more likely to be admitted to hospital with angina than others in the UK.

The university’s Professor Raj Bhopal said: “Scots have among the highest rates of heart attacks in the world, but we have shown that, among residents of Scotland, those of Pakistani origin followed by those of Indian origin have beaten them.”
