Health chiefs warn against cocaine use

HEALTH chiefs have highlighted the dangers of cocaine in a bid to persuade youngsters to avoid it.

NHS Lothian said there was a widespread misconception among many Edinburgh people that the substance was largely harmless.

However, as part of the appeal, it has singled out key facts about cocaine's impact with the help of the Edinburgh Alcohol and Drug Partnership.

Its manager, Nick Smith, said: "Young people often see cocaine as a harmless, even glamorous drug, a problem that is compounded by its falling cost and increased levels of availability across the country.

"Cocaine use can lead to some very serious health problems in addition to the danger of becoming addicted to the drug.

"These include heart attack, stroke, paranoia, impotence and nosebleeds."
