Harris Tweed: The celebrity brand

• Harris Tweed has been used by some of the world's leading brands, including Nike, whose cool retro trainers featuring a Harris Tweed swoosh made the fabric "street" for the first time.

• The late Alexander McQueen was one of the fashion world's greatest supporters of the cloth, incorporating Harris Tweed in his 2010-2011 winter line. Other major fashion houses who have used the cloth include Dries Van Noten, Ralph Lauren and Chanel.

• Matt Smith's Doctor Who is not the only high-profile wearer of Harris Tweed. Other stars who have donned the cloth include Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell.

Dame Vivienne Westwood is the designer with the longest association with the famous Scottish cloth. Her 1987 Harris Tweed collection - among her most famous designs - was inspired by the royal family.

• Harris Tweed upholstery features heavily in the interiors of the five-star Blythswood Hotel in Glasgow, above, which opened last year. It is thought to have been the biggest interiors project since Harris Tweed was used to fit out the QE2 in the 1960s.
