Hamster and rats rescued

PET rats and a hamster were rescued after fire crews were alerted by a quick-thinking neighbour.

The fire happened at 1.30pm yesterday at a house in Forrest Hill, next to George Heriot's School. The neighbour heard fire alarms ringing at the house and called the fire service. Crews made it in time to rescue two rats and a hamster.

Crews were out again at 7.45pm to rescue a man trapped in a 16-storey block of flats in Craigour Avenue, Moredun, when a pan of food caught fire.
