Hall of fame honours top sportswomen

Three women are to be inducted into the University of Edinburgh Sporting Hall of Fame.

The list is the first all-female shortlist since the awards began three years ago.

Cathy Panton-Lewis was co-founder of the first European women's golf tour and won Scottish Sports Woman of the Year while still a student at Edinburgh.

Shirley McIntosh won the first ever women's gold in Commonwealth shooting, having picked up her first gun during freshers' week. She won a place in the University team then went on to become a multiple Scottish and British champion.

Also being added this week is world champion orienteer Yvette Baker.

Previous inductees, all of whom developed their love of sport while studying or working at the university, include cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, athlete Eric Liddell, rugby star Gregor Townsend, and footballer Julie Fleeting.

Jim Aitken, director of the centre for sport and exercise said: "All three developed through University to become champions of their respective sports but what sets them truly apart is that they have been pioneers too."
