Greenpeace protesters in court

EIGHT Greenpeace supporters arrested after demonstrations at Shell petrol stations in Edinburgh have appeared on petition at the city’s sheriff court, charged with malicious mischief.

The protest was against plans by the oil giant to drill in the Arctic.

The accused appeared individually and in private.

No pleas or declarations were made on their behalf and the cases were continued for further inquiry.

Those charged, who included Simon Hackin, 46, of Edinburgh, were released on bail with the special condition that they do not enter any premises occupied by Shell UK.

Those living outwith the city – who came from as far afield as Belfast, London, and Abergwyngregynin, Gwynedd, were told not to enter Edinburgh unless for court business or to meet their solicitor.
