Greek islands 'not for sale'

GREECE has insisted it will not sell any of its islands to reduce its debts.

Prime minister George Papandreou said the islands were part of the nation's cultural heritage and important for tourism.

His comments came in response to a campaign by German tabloid Bild for Greece to sell islands in the wake of a eurozone bailout.

But Mr Papandreou said: "Anything like that is ruled out. You've simply got to understand how important these islands are for Greece and Greek history."

Opinion polls show most Germans oppose taxpayers bailing out Greece and other eurozone countries with huge debts.
