Daughter-in-law Ella Scott, 78, said: "Eleanor is in a nursing home now and wasn't able to make the party, but her daughter passed on a card from her to Janet and best wishes from her big sister."

Janet, who is one of nine children, also received birthday wishes from their two other surviving siblings, Jean Calder, 98, and Anne Carmichael, 95. She put her long life down to living off the land as children. Mrs Scott joked how her mother-in-law still saw herself as a "wee sister" after all these years.

Janet entered domestic service in Edinburgh and had two children, Jim, now 78, and Alec, who died in 1992.
