A record 1,200 children also participated in the 1.5km mini run and 2.5km junior run in the afternoon. Many of the youngsters were accompanied by parents pushing buggies.

Crowds gathered along the route shouting encouragement, with many holding up homemade placards for friends or relatives taking part.

The event had a carnival atmosphere with pipe bands dotted along the route at key distance points.

The winner in the men's event was Titus Mbishei, 19, from Kenya who crossed the line in 28 minutes 46 seconds, while fellow Kenyan Florence Kiplagat won the women's event in 32 minutes ten seconds.

Speaking after the run, Wendy Smith, 32, from Duns in the Borders, who took part in the 10km event for the first time before joining the junior event with her children Rhiannon, seven and Vhari, five, said: "I'm just buzzing, the atmosphere was great and running in such a big crowd was a real experience.

"I joined the local Jog Scotland club a few years ago and go out training with a few mums in the village.

"We started out doing 'walk a minute and run a minute' and worked up to this."

James MacGregor, 40, an IT consultant, from South Queensferry, near Edinburgh, said: "My wife Claire has done the run quite a lot and I thought it was time I gave it a go and got fitter.

"I finished the 10km in 58 minutes and managing to overtake people was nice and gave my spirits a bit of lift."

Rachel Skillen, eight, a pupil at South Morningside primary in Edinburgh, who completed the Mini Run, said: "I've been training by going lots of jogs and doing lots of sporty things. It's all been really exciting but the best bit was crossing the finishing line and getting a gold medal."
