Gray announces shadow cabinet

NEW Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray today announced his new shadow cabinet, keeping some old names and bringing in new faces.

His rivals for the leadership, Cathy Jamieson and Andy Kerr, are both given high profile posts - Ms Jamieson covering health and Mr Kerr finance.

Richard Baker, who previously served as chief whip, is given the job of shadow justice secretary.

And Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP John Park becomes shadow minister for economy and skills.

Pauline McNeill moves from justice to be shadow secretary for Europe, external affairs and culture.

Edinburgh Central MSP Sarah Boyack keeps the environment portfolio and Midlothian MSP Rhona Brankin continues with education.

MrGray had already announced Margaret Curran, Labour candidate in the Glasgow East by-election, would be in charge of developing the party's policy for the 2011 election.

Deputy leader Johann Lamont is made "chief of staff with special responsibility for equalities."

Michael McMahon is parliamentary business manager and David Stewart is chief whip.

Mr Gray said: "I am delighted with the team I have put together and that they have all accepted the challenge.

"I am especially pleased that Cathy Jamieson and Andy Kerr have chosen to serve in the shadow cabinet after the contribution they made to the leadership election campaign that help Labour get back in touch with our party roots.
