Grave cage to be resurrected

A HISTORIC iron cage covering a grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard is to be restored.

The cage is a mortsafe, a lockable iron cage that fits over a grave to prevent grave robbers from digging up the body inside.

The grave the mortsafe covers is for Elizabeth Jane Lindesay, who died in June 1832 – just one month before the Anatomy Act effectively ended the practice of body snatching.

Edinburgh World Heritage has provided a grant of 2,417.
