Government vows to help mountain rescue teams

Mountain rescue teams have been told they can expect government help towards the cost of their equipment.

Scottish Secretary Michael Moore said a "clear signal" of support has been given by the Treasury.

The Liberal Democrat MP made the comments during a visit to the Glencoe Mountain Rescue team, highlighting the "key role" it takes in public safety. The Lib Dems campaigned on the issue before the general election last year.

Mr Moore said: "The work of mountain rescue teams is a matter of life and death for those they help and (plays] a key role in very difficult circumstances.

"The Treasury has given a clear signal it will act to support mountain rescue teams and the details will come forward in the near future. This will help volunteers with the costs of their equipment."
