Gourmet Burger Kitchen creates ‘Glaswegian’ menu

To mark the grand opening, GBK - which was set up in London by New Zealanders Adam Wills, Greg Driscoll and Brandon Allen - created a ‘Glaswegian’ version of their men, just weeks after Pizza Hut created a ‘Scots’ menu to herald the opening of its new Silverburn branch.

Parts of the menu were fairly accurate, to be fair.

‘Hot drinks’ became ‘Hoat drinks’ and ‘red onion’ was given a Scots twist as ‘rid onion’.

But let’s not dwell too long on the ‘mulkshake’ section - Straeberry, Vaneelae (really) and Bananae - or the ‘Tonic Wine’ section of the menu which offers a choice of ‘Whitey’, ‘Riddy’ or ‘Rosy’.

And it seems like it might be GBK with the ‘riddy’ after several people took to Twitter to mock the menu, which the burger firm said had been created by a Glasgow comedian.

Euan McColm asked: “Why didn’t you commission a Glaswegian to do it?”while Chris Lindsay added: “Nobody in Glasgow speaks like that.”

@Rossco1876 informed them: “We pronounce the word bacon by saying bacon in Glasgow. Just thought I’d let yous know.”

And Niall Moran reckoned: “I think what they’ve done is muddled up Glasgow with Campbeltown.”

Other Twitter users felt it was a little patronising, and a tired stereotype.

However, GBK responded by saying: “We may get Twitter to edit version 2 for us.”
