Glasgow tenement masonry collapses onto street

MASONRY from a tenement block in central Glasgow has fallen onto the street, sparking safety fears over the structure.

Fire crews attended the incident at Baliol Street in the Woodlands area of Glasgow. Large chunks of masonry had fallen from the roof of a four storey sandstone tenement building in the West End area. Reports suggest a gas explosion may have caused the damage.

Emergency services evacuated the building as well as neighbouring properties. No injuries have been reported.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sid: “Crews are in attendance at an incident in Baliol Street in the West End of Glasgow.

“Crews arrived within five minutes to find masonry had fallen from a four storey tenement building onto the roadway.

“Firefighters conducting an evacuation of the building and neighbouring properties led six people to safety. Police Scotland then provided them with shelter.

“SFRS crews completed a search of the building and confirmed all people have been accounted for, with no reports of any injuries.

“The gas supply has been isolated and officers from Glasgow City Council Building Control are working to establish the safety of the structure.”
