Police were called to the scene but could not save him, the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) said.

The death followed a domestic disturbance in the Barmulloch area of Glasgow, on 25 May this year, but has just come to light in the Pirc report.

As police searched for the man, he made several phone calls to his family telling them that he intended to kill himself in a fire at the family home.

When police arrived at the address, he ignited the petrol, engulfing himself in flames.

He died two days later, in hospital, from his injuries.

Professor John McNeill, the commissioner, said: “I am satisfied that the police officers acted in a professional and appropriate manner.

“They took all steps in an attempt to preserve life and prevent the man from harming himself.”
