Glasgow Council fined after personal data stolen

Glasgow City Council have been fined £150,000 after losing two unencrypted laptops which were said to contain the details of upto 20,000 people.

The fine, by the Information Commissioner’s Office, comes just three years after the council was hit with an enforcement notice for losing personal information an a memory stick.

The fine relates to an incident where the two laptops were stolen in May 2012, which saw one locked in a drawer while the key was put in another unlocked drawer which also contained the second device.

One of the laptops was said to contain the bank account details of over 6,069 people, and during the investigation the Information Commissioner’s Office discovered that another 74 unencrypted laptops could not be found.
