Glasgow 2014: Baton tours Glasgow landmarks

SINGER SUSAN BOYLE will be among those carrying the Queen’s Baton, which has continued its journey through the Commonwealth Games host city with visits to some of Glasgow’s most recognisable landmarks.

The baton set off from the Riverside Museum, travelled to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, the new Hydro, which will be used as a Games venue, and, after ziplining across the River Clyde from the Finnieston Crane, arrived at the Glasgow Science Centre.

Baton bearers included television personality Hardeep Singh Kohli, who stopped to pose for photographers at the Hydro, and Ian Aitken, chief executive of Cycling Scotland, who took the baton on a bike from the city’s new Mass Automated Cycle Hire (Mach) scheme.

Britain’s Got Talent star Boyle will carry it at Yorkhill Royal Hospital for Sick Children this morning.

The baton will finish the day at a celebration event in Victoria Park featuring sports, arts and dance activities and special entertainment.

It returned yesterday to Glasgow, where it was designed, marking the final countdown to the opening ceremony of the 2014 Games.

The Queen’s Baton Relay, which got under way in October, is now on its 285th day.

The symbol of the Games has already been held aloft by tens of thousands of bearers across 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

Its arrival in Glasgow marks the finale of its trip through Scotland, where it has already spent more than a month.

On the first day of its journey around the host city yesterday it visited the city centre, including the Merchant City, Buchanan Street and George Square.

It also paid a visit to some of the Games venues, including the Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre and Celtic Park.

The day culminated with an evening celebration at Springburn Park.

The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony will take place at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.
