Glasgow 2014 appoints head of Organising Committee

David Grevemberg has been confirmed as the chief executive of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee for the Commonwealth Games.

He starts his new post with immediate effect and will be responsible for overseeing the running of the committee as well as ensuring all aspects of Games planning are being delivered on time and on budget.

Mr Grevemberg, who previously worked as an executive director at the International Paralympic Committee, was chosen from a shortlist of seven after a worldwide search to find a replacement for John Scott, who resigned after breaking the organisation’s gifts policy.

Mr Grevemberg said: “I am humbled by this opportunity to lead such an amazing team, driven by passion for sport and a commitment to bring what will be an outstanding Games to our great city of Glasgow and all of Scotland. Every day is a day closer to the opening ceremony, and another day we can’t get back. We cannot afford to miss a beat and I am confident of leading this team and working with our Games partners to successfully achieve our goals.”

The chairman of Glasgow 2014, Lord Smith, said he was delighted to have found “the best person for the job”.

Meanwhile, the executive who is to lead the fundraising drive for the £45 million landmark outpost of the V&A Museum in Dundee was named yesterday.

Sandy Richardson, head of development at the National Museums of Scotland for the past seven years, has been appointed development director for the project. A spokesman for the project partnership said: “Mr Richardson has led award-winning fundraising teams with a proven record in raising large sums of money from both public and private sources, domestically and internationally.“
