Ginger-haired flashmob planned for Drum Castle to mark Brave release

THE National Trust for Scotland is planning to stage the country’s first ever “Ginger Snap” – a flashmob of flame-haired folk - at one of Aberdeenshire’s most historic castles.

The gathering of red heads is being planned for Friday at the trust’s Drum Castle, near Banchory, to celebrate the Scottish cinema release of Disney Pixar’s Brave movie which features a red haired heroine called Merida.

Ginger haired men, women and children are being invited to assemble in the castle’s main courtyard at noon for the unique event. And those taking part will be given free entry to the castle.

A spokeswoman for the National Trust explained “:Redheads of all ages are welcome to get involved in the event which will last no more than half an hour.”

Alison Burke, the property manager at the castle, will be welcoming the flashmob to Drum. She said: “As an auburn-haired maiden, charged with the care of a romantic and beautiful castle, I certainly relate to Merida. We want as many redheads to come along and help us celebrate the release of Brave, celebrate history and make a bit of history too, with this Scottish first.”

She added: “Aberdeenshire has the country’s highest concentration of red hair, so we are hoping for an impressive turn out.”

Drum Castle is the oldest intact building in the care of the National Trust for Scotland with a square tower dating from the 13th Century. It was, from 1323 to 1975, the home of the Irvine family.
