Gilroy set for sentence appeal

DAVID Gilroy, who was convicted of the murder of his former lover Suzanne Pilley, is to appeal against his 18-year jail sentence.

It is understood Lord Bracadale’s summing up to the jury during Gilroy’s trial at the High Court in Edinburgh could form part of the appeal.

Gilroy, 49, was found guilty of murdering Ms Pilley, 38, in March, almost two years after she set off on her usual journey to work in the city centre but never arrived.

The Scottish Courts Service said some of the grounds of appeal were being allowed after a “sifting” judge decided they had merit.

A spokesman said: “If [Gilroy’s legal team] wish to contest this they have 14 days to respond and request a hearing.”
