Gift-wrapped £1000 boost for life savers

A GENEROUS Dunbar family has swapped traditional birthday gift-giving in favour of donating the cost of their presents to the town's RNLI - raising nearly £1000.

Members of the Lamb family - Susan, 50, Sandra, 40, and Kirsty, 16 - collectively decided to forego birthday presents this year in the hope of raising money for much-needed swift water rescue equipment for the local lifeboat station.

In total 950 was amassed from the big-hearted concept, which was originally proposed by Susan Lamb, the mother of deputy second coxswain of the town's fleet, Jamie Lamb.

She said: "We thought it would be good to raise money for this equipment instead of having folk going to the trouble of buying presents for us all."

Dunbar RNLI coxswain Gary Fairbairn, who recently learned he was to have a new street named after him, said: "Swift water rescue takes a whole different skill set and equipment from our regular training so this contribution has been extremely valuable."

Susan Lamb handed over some of the specialist equipment to members of the lifeboat crew at one of their regular training sessions.
