Germany announces end of conscription

Germany's defence minister has said the nation will end conscription in July 2011, replacing its current military force with a volunteer service of about 185,000 troops focused on missions abroad.

Parliament is expected next month to pass a proposal that envisions a 12- to 23-month volunteer term of service and cuts the defence ministry's bloated bureaucracy.
