Genocide survivor speaks out

AN award-winning songwriter who survived the genocide in Rwanda has spoken of the experience in a public speech at Broughton High School to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Jean Paul Samputu, whose family was murdered in his native country in 1994, was one of several guest speakers at last night’s event in Comely Bank. Music, dance and poetry were combined to commemorate the impact of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

The memorial day is designed to encourage people to learn lessons from the historic events. Lord Provost Donald Wilson and Holocaust survivor Marianne Lazlo also attended.
