Generous spirits

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), left, born in Dunfermline, gave more than £70 million to libraries and education in the UK and US.

James Donaldson (1751-1830), a Scottish printer and newspaper publisher, left 220,000 for the foundation of Donaldson's Hospital for the poor children of Edinburgh. George Heriot (1563-1624) left most of his estate, 23,625, to the city of Edinburgh in order to found a hospital to care for "faitherless bairns". J Paul Getty (1892-1976), right, a US industrialist, spent the latter part of his life in the UK. Much of his estate has gone to the arts, via a trust now worth $4.2bn.
