Funding to offer carers short breaks

HUNDREDS of carers across the Lothians will be given funds and resources to enjoy a short break this year, it has emerged.

As part of the scheme, 3000 people in Scotland will be able to get some relief from their daily duties caring for a loved one and have a brief holiday.

The Scottish Government said the investment was a way of making their day-to-day lives more bearable.

It is estimated voluntary carers save the NHS and councils millions of pounds every year.

Young carers will be given particular attention as part of the initiative.

Children's minister Adam Ingram said: "Short breaks can provide crucial respite for families dealing with the varying demands of looking after a disabled child.

"I have seen at first hand projects providing a great experience for disabled children and a short break for their parents, brothers and sisters."
