Fringe goers line up the Bang Bang Club

FRINGE comedy – check. Fringe drama – check. Fringe music – check. Fringe clubbing, check . . .

This month the Bang Bang Club have joined forces with the Gilded Balloon to take up a residency in the basement of Teviot House – the new HQ for the club's distinctive blend of musical and visual mayhem.

Operating every Thursday to Sunday throughout August, the Bang Bang Club will be the only late night club to be found on the Fringe, cranking out the beats from 12.30am until 5am every weekend.

Having already gained a faithful band of followers (by all accounts the most recent night in Cabaret Voltaire's suitably decadent Speakeasy was pretty special), the ethos which drives the club has proved a popular one; basically a mission to offer an intelligent mash-up of music for a more discerning audience.

Essentially three guys who met playing gigs with their respective bands in the Capital, the Bang Bang Club are now upping the ante after being asked to run the club as part of the official Fringe programme.

The three are Finlay Wilson of Isa & The Filthy Tongues, Stephen Donkin, formerly of Rohypsters and currently playing with The Knavemen, and Cornelius Pierce (aka Omega Male) former frontman with The Rohypsters and Omega Suit.

Pierce reveals, "The chance came up to run the club through the festival, so we sat down and went through a wish-list of bands and DJs we'd like to see ourselves. Then we started getting in touch with them to see if they fancied playing. The response has been amazing.

"Everyone we approached jumped on board and the result is a mix of bands and DJs who we're chuffed to bits to be putting on – eclectic, cutting edge and completely suited to what we're trying to doing at the club. Very Bang Bang. basically."

The list of acts already confirmed to appear over the next three weeks reads like a who's who of alternative and groundbreaking artists, reflecting the wide-ranging musical tastes of the Bang Bang Club itself.

Cult figures like Billy Childish and Steven Severin look certain to attract an eclectic crowd. Severin, the bass guitarist and major driving force behind Siouxsie and the Banshees, is taking up a four-night residency and creating a live soundtrack for four versions of The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari, the German expressionist classic.

Childish, on the other hand, is a veritable garage rock icon, resurrecting the sound from the mid-80s onwards with such stellar bands as The Milkshake, The Pop Rivets and The Buff Medways.

He'll be gracing the Capital on Sunday with a solo blues set and some of his trade-mark poetry. Sure to be a sell-out, book early to avoid missing out.

Other highlights over the coming weeks include Liverpool's finest Clinic, Glasgow's Big Ned and two of Edinburgh's own dealers in left-field sonic soundscapes, Paul Vickers And The Leg and Isa And The Filthy Tongues.

There is also the treat of being able to catch former Fire Engines, Win and Nectarine No.9 frontman Davie Henderson strutting his always-intriguing-stuff with latest reincarnation Sexual Objects, who've been enjoying radio airings via Marc Riley's BBC 6 show.

Such live acts, combined with the Bang Bang's resident DJs and VJ, i-man4-d, plus regular favourites like Dolphin Boy and Kris Wasabi Disco, make the Bang Bang Club the only place to be seen in the wee small hours.
