Police said they responded to another incident in the South Road area at the same time, where a man had been assaulted, and said that they are treating this second incident as “linked but separate”.

A 20-year-old man has been reported in relation to the assault.

Police said it is believed the man struck by the car had been on the road earlier and had either spoken to the driver of a light coloured car, or caused the driver of the car to slow almost to a stop as it drove out of the town near to the Gray and Adams premises in South Road.

They are keen to speak to the driver of this car and any other witnesses.

The road was closed after the crash for investigation.
