Four seriously hurt as coaches collide

TWO adults and two children were seriously injured when two coaches collided yesterday in North Yorkshire.

The accident happened just before 11.30am on the A170 near Pickering. A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said there were a "number of walking wounded" and several people had been checked over at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

She added: "It appears most people had a lucky escape. The two adults and two children have serious injuries and have been taken to hospital but their condition is not believed to be life-threatening."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said two coaches and a car were involved.

She said a total of 100 people were travelling on the coaches, which were carrying youngsters and their parents or carers on a day trip from Newcastle to Flamingo Land theme park.

A total of 20 people were injured as a result of the accident.
