Four rescued from Perth tenement fire

FOUR people were rescued by firefighters from the roof of a blazing tenement building in the centre of Perth in the early hours of this morning.

Two of the four were taken by ambulance for treatment at Perth Royal Infirmary but were later released.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. It is understood they are treating the blaze as “suspicious.”

Three fire units were called to the blaze in High Street in Perth shortly after 5am today. They used an aerial unit to reach four people who were trapped on the roof of the building.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Tayside Division attended at an address in High Street, Perth, at 5.20am following a report of a fire. Two people were taken to Perth Royal Infirmary to be checked over and were later allowed away. Enquiries into the full set of circumstances are ongoing and a joint investigation is being carried out with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire, which was reported at around 5.21am, was extinguished by firefighters in breathing apparatus using one main jet and one hose reel jet. Four people were removed from the roof by firefighters using a nine metre ladder and were not seriously injured. Two of them were taken to Perth Royal Infirmary for treatment, but later released. “

He added: “Crews used a fan to ventilate the property and a thermal imaging camera to check the roof space for evidence of further fire spread.Three appliances from the Perth station attended the incident.

A joint fire and police investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire.”
