Four in hospital after fumes alert

FOUR people were being treated in hospital last night after a toxic chemical emergency at a city centre gym. The incident at the Virgin Active health club at the Omni Centre in Edinburgh saw hundreds of gym members, cinema goers and restaurant customers evacuated on fears toxic fumes might spread through the leisure complex.

Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade said workmen cleaning the gym's swimming pool had been decanting liquid from one container to another in a room storing chemicals, causing a toxic gas reaction.
