Footballer's fine may be quashed

Prosecutors have given consent to "set aside" the conviction and sentence handed to former Celtic star Aiden McGeady after he was fined for speeding.

The Crown's case claimed the winger was caught driving his Audi Q7 4x4 at 54mph in a 30mph area in February 2009. McGeady was fined 400 and had four points put on his licence in Glasgow in April this year.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for the Crown Office said: "Due to an absence of evidence detailing the speed limit indications present on the road, the Crown has indicated its consent to the conviction and sentence being set aside."

The case will go before the High Court where a judge will decide whether the conviction should be quashed.

McGeady completed a 9.5 million move to Spartak Moscow last week.
