Flood alert as Scotland faces another soaking

Flood warnings were issued across Scotland last night as heavy rain continued to fall in many parts of the country.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said flooding was likely in Aberdeenshire, parts of Inverness-shire and many other areas, all the way to the Borders.

Dumfries and Galloway Police warned that drivers should take extra care on the roads, in anticipation of heavy rain continuing today.

The Sepa website lists flood warnings for Central Scotland, Tayside, Fife, Edinburgh and Lothian, the Borders, Dundee and Angus, Argyll and Bute, west central Scotland, Ayrshire and Arran, Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen city, and Skye and Lochaber.

A spokesman for the agency said: "We expect to see a gradual rise in river levels. But as rain is persistent rather than thundery downpours, we do not expect to see any sudden increases.

"Accumulation of surface water and standing water is also anticipated."

The Met Office said it expected severe weather in Strathclyde, the Borders, Tayside, Fife, Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway and Central Scotland.

Less rain is expected today, but the Met Office said disruption was likely because of flooding from standing water and swollen rivers and streams.
